4 Reasons We Do Not Use S.M.A.R.T. Goals


Champions, every since we have been in high school and college, guidance counselors, advisors, teachers and professors have encouraged us to use S.M.A.R.T. goals. S.M.A.R.T. goals means - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. If you are truly SMART, then you will not use S.M.A.R.T. goals. Here are the four reasons that you should stay away from so called S.M.A.R.T goals:

Realistic?

Listen to us, don't allow anyone, any person, any parent or any friend to determine what is realistic for you. You and only you have the power to make that determination. Now, other people will tell you what they think is realistic, but you don't have to believe their thoughts. Someone’s perception does not have to be your reality. When people question and doubt what is real for you, that simply means they don't or didn't have the guts to fight against the odds. Well, champ, that is not you! Like many of the influential people in the past, they chose not to be S.M.A.R.T. .

The Greats were not S.M.A.R.T

Think about it, you think Steve Jobs used S.M.A.R.T goals. His dream of having a personal computer in everyone’s home was not realistic. You think Martin Luther King used S.M.A.R.T goals? His dreamed of racial equality was not realistic. You think Thomas Edison used S.M.A.R.T goals? He tried over 1000 times to event the light bulb and failed. Many people thought his ideal was unrealistic. Will Smith said it best, “Being realistic is the easy road toward mediocrity”. Don't take that road, be unrealistic and that is SMART! Good!, Don't Be S.M.A.R.T - You don't need a system to achieve your goals or dreams. Academic advisors tell students often “write your S.M.A.R.T goals down”. The moment you get to the realistic section, you will begin to doubt the specific goal. Don't cheat yourself by using an old and out dated system. Look, write your goals down and everyday make sure that you are working on them. Whatever you need to sacrifice to make your goal come true, be willing and ready to sacrifice. Sometime your goal may not be “timely” and so what! You have to keep working and working, but never doubting. We call this the “Ground and Pound” - hit the ground running as you are pounding toward your goal!

A SMART Process

Every goal has a process. No process is alike, but it has process. If a goal is to be achieved it will depend on the focus of the process. A goal is attainable and unattainable, but that all depends on the process. Don't get concern about the outcome of your goal, but fall deeply in love and be obsessed with the process. Once you understand what it takes, you can go and get it! You can go and get it despite the hate or unbelief of those around you. S.M.A.R.T goals will never ask you, “Are you willing to endure to the end to achieve your goal”? Well, NO! That is why we throw the realistic section out of the window. Only until you grind the process over and over again, then you will know if something is realistic- for you….not for anyone else, but you!

No Goal Setting Method Is Perfect.

You don't need them. What you need is GRIT. You need a mindset that will be determined, committed, and hyper focus on your goals. You need to believe against the odds that you can make your goal be a reality. Before you hear it, let us warn you; someone really “smart”, like a professor or president of a company, will tell you that you cannot do what you want to do. We are telling you right now to embrace the hate. You can make anything happen if you are willing to grind and sweat for it. That is point blank. The only system you need is the one you are willing to create. Don't ask if your goal is realistic, but asked are you willing to commit to the process to make it come true. Don't ask if your goal is realistic, because you truly won’t know what is real and what is not, until you put the sweat and grind into the process. Set your goals, grind out for your goals and achieve your goals. It is easier said than done, but it can be done, we are living proof!
