Ron was working with first generation college students in his Upward Bound program, and I was a principal at an urban elementary school. Time and again we were trading stories about our students and the experiences they were having day-in and day-out.
We wanted to create something that the first gen student could pick and read on the spot. Ron and I wanted to talk with them and share our story.
Gritty was not meant to be a book about first generation college students. It is a book for first generation college students. Sure directors, professors, and teachers can read Gritty, but the book was created with the student in mind.
What does it feel like to always be chasing something? The chase!
Running…running…running…striving to beat a personal milestone that I placed on myself…running! My mind is always going! I hear the words in my head, "Rodney, you can do this…you got this…let's get this!"
My greatest curse is my greatest gift! My focus allows me to disregard anyone that does not believe in me and my goals. This can be good and bad, it depends.
At times, I am not worried about friendships, others thoughts of me, or the outside world. I am locked the hell in!
…and I love it!
While I may pass by others on the relationship meter, and the "having fun" meter, it did not miss anything on the...
I have never been the fastest, the smartest, or the strongest. Never! So, growing up, when you are like me, you fight for every second, every grade, and every rep.
Back in the day, in high school, I would stay after school to get extra math help on a regular basis. I would do agility drills to increase my speed, and I would do push-ups at night in hopes of getting stronger.
You know, I am not sure if you can tell, but my gift from God is my work ethic. When I want something, I blackout, lock-in, and focus like hell! I have got to get it!
At 36 years old, I am still this way! It is probably more intense now than my younger years. My gift has allowed me to accomplish...
Do something! Go ahead…get started! Your spirit is telling you to evolve, involve, and revolve around this passion, this gift, this formation. Life is gorgeous when this happens.
I know that it is hard to do, but move at your own pace! You are not in a race with anyone, but you! You do not have to compare yourself to your friends on Snapchat, Facebook and IG.
C'mon, go for it! The feeling we get in our stomach when we know we should do something, you know, it puts us out there a little more than we are comfortable with…but makes us take the next step! It is a high…better than any drug. Take some...
No worries…haters, hate. Complainers, complain. Nitpic...
Good, I thought it was just me! You know, I realize that we all have a little fear hanging around. We should though…it keeps us alive and safe!
My daughter was lacking fear when she touched that brownie pan just taken out of the oven….OWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW….with many tears of course!
So fear is not bad, for safety reasons.
Yet there is the darkside of fear. It controls our thoughts and actions. We feel dumb, stupid, less than. I can't stand that feeling. If my fear was a person, I would punch the hell out of him! But…it is not, lucky me!
I am not a violent man, but damn, the stomach knots and sweaty palms…I do not like it one bit.
